KTM CCA 2010 - Rider information

Dear Adventurer!


Thanks for your entry to the 2010 KTM Capital Coast Adventure. The venue for the CCA is the Plimmerton School, near Porirua 25 km north of Wellington. When traveling South on SH1, turn right at the 2nd set traffic lights entering Plimmerton. Those traveling North turn left at the first set of lights past Shell Mana, just north of the Mana shops. Go past the Plimmerton Station and turn right at the roundabout in the village. Look out for the KTM signs and enduro arrows.

TIMETABLE

Friday 19th March

4:00 pm on Campers can pitch their tents in the school grounds. The children will instruct you where to setup camp. A heated pool, warm shower and toilets are available.

5:00 pm on The Plimmerton Boating Club is the venue for registration. Exit the school gates and go straight ahead at the roundabout and follow the foreshore North for about 1.5 km and the PBC is on the left. Bring your scissors and selotape.

The PBC has a great restaurant with views out over the harbour. To help the chef with meal planning, please email the club manager if you intend on dining. The food is very good and we can highly recommend it, check out the menu HERE

Saturday 20th March

7:45 am Second riders briefing at Plimmerton School – listen up (attendance at one or other briefing is mandatory).

8:15 am First bikes leave. It’ll be a big day so please aim to get away pronto.

8:45 am Latest departure time (many gates will be locked by sweep riders).

12:00 ish Lunch at Red Baron TSS Motorcycles (KTM) Cuba Street Petone. If you have any special dietary requirements, please tell John via email ASAP

4:30pm ish Riders start returning, BYO drinks – Plimmerton 4 Square down on the round about will be well stocked.

6.00 pm Dinner served in the school hall by the Spit Roast Co. There will be vegetarian options - please let me know if you have any other special dietary requirements.

7.30 pm Prize giving, party party ....

CCA REGISTRATION

At registration you will receive your route sheets, an ID sticker for your bike, your badge and a copy of the ‘Capital Coast Courier. Take the CCCourier with you on the ride as it contains last minute news and info on alternate routes (in case of bad weather). Due to the early start on Saturday we’d prefer it if you register at the PBC Friday night. If you are unable to get to the PBC and would like to get your route sheets in advance, they will be made available via the web (PDF or JPG format) so you can print them before you leave home. Please email ccadv@xtra.co.nz, subject ‘routesheet’ no earlier that Wed 17th if you prefer this option.

THE KTM DEMO BIKE

KTM New Zealand is kindly providing a demo 690 Enduro machine for you to sample. You’ll be able to test ride the 690 on the CCA route in the conditions it was designed for. If you would like to ride the demo bike, there’ll be some forms to complete first, see the KTM crew on Friday at the boating club.

TYRES

Summer is nearly over and there's been a bit of rain in Wellington over the past 10 days. As we have always stated, KNOBBLY TYRES are strongly recommended for all machines regardless of route options. Bring a pressure gauge and reduce the pressure in your tyres to improve traction. Talk to any of the seasoned campaigners if you’re not sure what pressures to set. Rim locks advisable at pressures below about 18 lb/in.

GENERAL

The CCA is a whole lot of great NZ backcountry riding within 30km of the Beehive and a test of navigation skills. There will be several 'bail-out' points to shorten the route if you decide to quit early or get behind time. The route sheet has ETAs at certain places so you can pace yourself throughout the day.

If you get lost it will be because of: a) following someone else who's lost b) not reading the instructions properly c) not allowing for error between your speedo and ours

If in doubt pull over, stop and check your route sheet. If you have machinery break-down, stay with your machine and wait for the sweep crew. There will be no backup vehicle with trailer so you are expected to come prepared and self sufficient.

You will be passing through about 20 properties in all. It has taken us a lot of sweet-talking and negotiation with authorities and a substantial BOND to secure these properties so please ensure you follow instructions and behave appropriately to ensure the CCAs future.

ROUTE FOLLOWING

1. The instructions are basic and not designed to puzzle. A 'Lunch box' navigator is a virtual necessity. See the CCA website for instructions to build one. GPS Users SEE HERE

2. You need a re-settable speedo - miles and kilometers will be given.

3. Being an urban adventure the greatest distance between fuel stops will be no more than 50 km. No prompts to refuel will be given it’s up to you to remember to fill the tank.

4 Route instructions will be on standard route sheets. When you slice up the sheets, FYI the middle row is wider than the outer ones (ie a true 1/3 of A4 width) so you can actually cut down the lines. The whole ride is route-sheeted apart from a few sections where you will follow arrows. There will be arrows on other parts of the course but these are only to supplement the printed instructions.

5. In general, side roads are not marked unless at a 'T' or 'Y' intersection, however they may be noted in brackets for clarity. If a side road is not marked then ignore it. Stay on the roads/trails that are obviously more major unless told otherwise.

RIDING

1. The CCA is non-competitive - it is not a race. There is no prize for being first to finish. Anyone riding in an anti-social or inconsiderate manner will be asked to take an early shower.

2. Keep LEFT on all roads at all times. Remember, country folk aren't used to getting much traffic on THEIR roads. Some of our roads are extremely narrow and winding so you need to ride like you are expecting an oncoming car. This is important, we cannot stress this enough.

3. Ride quietly and sensibly past farmhouses and wave to the farmer.

4. Most off-road sections are still OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. This means you will encounter other users possibly in 4X4s with bull bars - MESSY ! Keep left and always be prepared to make a defensive maneuver. You WILL (not might) meet pedestrians and cyclists on some trails so slow down or stop and give them plenty of space. We have permission for everywhere we go but we do not have exclusive access.

RIDING KIT

1. Make sure your machine is up to the task. Give it a thorough check-over before you leave home - WOF, Rego, chain & sprockets, brakes, wheel bearings, spark arrestor muffler(s) are mandatory. Please seek advice on this if you are not sure and avoid disappointment.

2. Tyres – I recommend the Continental TKC 80 range of tyres. I have been using them for 5 years and they provide a high degree of rider confidence both on and off-road. For all-round NZ adventure conditions, you can’t go past them.

3. Assemble a tool kit and puncture repair outfit. Even if you don’t have the skills to mend a puncture you should at least carry a pair of tubes. There are always helpful people on these rides. Don’t forget your fire extinguisher

CLOTHING

We’re hoping for a fine day, but you’ll need to be prepared for all 4 seasons … All participants must comply with the following:

1. Wear proper motorcycle boots and gloves. Wear or carry a water-proof jacket and leggings Gortex/Cordura are the go. Goggles or a visor are a must.

2. Carry some extra gloves and some polypropylene or wool clothing in case of cold weather. Be warned that if you stray off the course and break down in some areas of the adventure route, the prospect of spending a night in the open is a very real possibility.

SWEEP CREW

A motorcycle mounted sweep crew will tail the field in all sections. If you are slowing them too much they may direct you to take a short-cut. They will have mobile phones in case of emergency - these phone numbers will be on your route sheets. There will be no ute/trailer sweep. No part of the course is more than about 30 km from Plimmerton.

PLIMMERTON SCHOOL

We are very fortunate to have the use of the Plimmerton School facilities. Please respect the school property, take away your trash and clean up any mess you make. It would be helpful if you could remove your own empties too.
