Terawhiti Station Access Granted

Even if you’re a Wellingtonian, the KTM Capital Coast Adventure will once again take you places you haven’t been before, or at least not for a while. Terewhiti Station, west of the city, once a dirt bike playground for many locals has been off-limits for the past three years during the construction of the
Meridian West Wind project. The 62 turbine 142MW wind farm was commissioned in late 2009 but has remained tightly locked to visitors. However after negotiation with Terawhiti management and Meridian Energy,we have managed to gain access to the property for this year’s CCA.

This privileged access has been granted on a ‘one-off’ basis and security and safety will be high on the list of strict conditions. This event in no way signals any opening up of the property to the public, those ‘wild west’ days are over. With 33km of road having been developed on the project, the landscape has changed somewhat. A lot of the old tracks we used on the 2006 CCA will now be roads but it’ll be great to see those majestic rotors up close.

Come prepared for the ride of your life - Checklist for the CCA
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Spark Arrestor on your exhaust(s)
  • Knobbly tyres, (especially the front)
  • Tool kit and puncture repair gear
  • Click-Clack navigator (even if you are using the GPS option)
  • Suitable clothing for all seasons
  • Good gloves (we have the off gorse bush down here!)
  • Camera with big memory card

FIRE EXTINGUISHERS will be mandatory on the CCA as demanded by some land owners. Most adventure rides in NZ require fire extinguishers to be carried by all participants.

The blue 450g aerosol ABC type came from Fitness Hire (member razzel1 on TradeMe). The red 'Fire Exit' and the TUNDRA Fire Suppressant are available in Mitre 10, Mega, Placemakers, Bunnings and Briscoes stores. All are $20 - $25

These can easily mounted to the bike or or carried in a back-pack and should be within easy reach. Keep it in the kitchen or workshop for the rest of the year,

You will be asked to show your extinguisher as you enter the forestry sections. Failure to carry one will bar you from entering those sections. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

The CCA will be open to all fully licensed riders and pillions on road legal motorcycles. No Quads or sidecars Michael. The CCA is not a speed event so MNZ license is not required, just a civil license.

There will be sweep riders on motorcycles - ie NO SWEEP VEHICLE to pick up dead bikes. You are expected to carry a basic toolkit and be self sufficient for any breakdowns you may have.
